Video of Days 169, 170, 171 and 172 - Burlington, WA

Went picking up prunes today!

This was a great day!

I woke up earlier than usual, at about 8:15am and got ready to depart! Don, Pat and I went out to a private residence in Anacortes, about 14 miles from their house, to pick up prunes which were falling on the ground and going to waste. The Owner did not want any of them, so he contacted Don and we decided to go pick them up.

We collected about 150 pounds of prunes during the morning alone. A few boxes were distributed to people Don and Pat knew, and the remaining we brought home. Here Pat processed them by placing them in Jars. They also prepared them to be stocked by dehydrating the remaining prunes and placing them in vacuum bags.

All we picked up: prunes and a few apples!

I had a lot of fun! After that I spent most of the day working on my things.

Cheers,
Eduardo

Awesome group picture!

Today we received these pictures from Lea, the girl in the blue shorts. She took the first one as we were having dinner on Sat night.

The second one she took just before departing yesterday morning. Here we can see the whole group together!

From the left: Don, Gregor, Lea, Ronja (baby), Joe, Emmalee, Pat and myself.

This was such a great time and the pictures were good too, so I decided to post them here as well.

Cheers!

Visiting Mount Vernon, WA

This morning I ride with the cyclists from warmshowers which spent the last couple of night with us. They were heading south, so I took the opportunity to ride with them to Mount Vernon, a small city located just about six miles from Don and Pat's house.

Before departing I took a few pictures of Don's garage which was full if touring bicycles and equipment, very nice!!

Don's garage looked more like a shop!

Here is me in Mount Vernon, WA this morning, after the rest of the group had followed their way south:

Soon I will post the videos of the last few days which include the cyclists staying with us, and this group ride to Mount Vernon!

We had full house last few days!

Last Friday a German couple and their baby came to Don and Pat's house. Gregor and Lea are cyclists, pedaling from Alaska and going towards the tip of South America. They carry their baby with them which is just 15 month old! The baby, Ronja, seems to enjoy traveling very much.

Yesterday we cycled to the downtown area of Burlington and spent some time at a Starbucks, then stopped at the supermarket before coming home.

Later in that same day two more riders which had also contacted Don and Pat though the WarmShowers.org website arrived! We had a total of seven adults and the baby that night. It was very nice. I cooked for us, Don and Pat made the salad and we had a great time talking over dinner.

This was a very unusual time. This morning they all left. They are riding together from this point on and plan to keep as group up to southern California, when they will split and follow different routes.

I took the opportunity to ride with them this morning a few miles up to Mount Vernon. There we said good bye and I rode back to the house.

Here are some pictures we took this morning before departing.

Such an amazing time. I will definitely look into hosting cyclists in the future as well, whenever I get settled somewhere.

Cheers,
Eduardo

Q&A with Hanumatpresaka Swami

Today I participated on the first half of the Question and Answers session with Hanumatpresaka Swami. It was held on Tiago Silveira's house, in Houston, Texas. We connected through Skype. Here are some pictures of my view of the room and of the Swami:

Unfortunately my connection was too slow to understand parts of his teachings and absolutely non-functional when the questions started, but I could still get something out of it.

Next time I hope to be in town and participate live.

Cheers,
Eduardo

Nice sunny days in Burlington

Today we had one more sunny day. Not too hot, just perfect. I still have't seen any rain since I entered WA in late July. I decided to have lunch outside, so I heated up the pasta I had cooked yesterday and set on the backyard table.

Views of the backyard.

And here is me with my new haircut :D

Then I needed to download a few things for work I'm doing so I biked to downtown and spent the rest of the afternoon at a Starbucks uploading videos of the previous days and doing my research.

Don and Pat are out of town since yesterdayat a Pastor's conference and should return tomorrow.

Cheers,
Eduardo

Bike ride in Lopez island, WA

Hi!!
I've finally been able to connect and post the pictures of our bike ride in Lopez island last Friday  - 09/14/2012.

Don, Pat and I woke up early and by 8:00 am were already on our way to the ferry. Don drove to Anacortes, WA, a nearby city where ferries to several Washington and Canada islands departs from. He parked at a Safeway supermarket and we rode about 4 miles to the ferry. We ended up arriving early too early and waited for about an hour for the scheduled departure at 9:35am.

Preparing to depart, and at the ferry towards Lopez island.

The ferry ride was short but enjoyable. By 10:15, we were getting out of the ferry and riding towards the other end of Lopez island.

We rode to the island's main village where they had a few stores, a small supermarket and a coffee house. We bought sandwiches there, then rode all the way to the other side of the island. It was an about 12 miles ride, not too long.

Don at Agate beach, on the south end of Lopez island.

We also explored some of the most remote locations there including a hike to a place where sea lions could be seen. We stopped and had lunch at the rocks while watching the sea lions. What an amazing time!

View of the sea lions through the bibulous.

From there we rode up to the East side of the island and visited a state park located there.

Before returning to the 6:15pm ferry we made a short stop. Don and I layed on the top of some tables at the State Park and rested for about 30 minutes.

The ferry ride back to mainland was also pleasant. we arrived at Don's car just before dusk and drove back home where I cooked us dinner.

At the ferry riding back to mainland.

This was a great day! In total we rode 44 miles that day.

I look forward riding with them on San Juan island which is a little further away than Lopez. Maybe we will be able to do it some day next week.

Cheers!
Eduardo
